HEZRON: Project Trio Review
It's difficult to say what genre Hezron is in, he defies pigeon holes. To say he plays Jazz Fusion only tells half the story.
Jazz is part of his soul and it's the way he plays Jazz that makes all the difference. Passion? Yes, he's got tons of passion but I know musicians with passion that are missing that vital something which turns it into something else. That something else is what we the audience receive. An experience.
At his Spice of Life 'HEZRON: Project Trio' debut we got that experience which left us stunned and jaws dropping before the applause erupted and the demands for an encore escalated. Hezron duly obliged with more magic from his fingers on the grand piano. Then the manager of the venue suggested maybe another song? What! He was ASKING us did we want another song! Damn right we did and Hezron did not need much persuading.
So what's so special about the man? Well there are piano players and there are PIANO PLAYERS. There are piano players who tend to thump the piano - they think that the louder they thump, the more cool they look and sound. With Hezron you get shades of sound. Yeah he can rock and give out great chunky booming chords but also he can stroke the keys sensuously.
That's how he makes a piano sing, he can envelop you in a wall of sound and if you watch his fingers some times they are a blur.
Now Hezron has two backing musicians. Hang on, I don't think it's right to call them backing musicians - they are musicians in their own right. His bassist, Dave Shannon, turned what can be a dull instrument if not played well into a star in its own right. His playing was meaty but never overpowering.
Dan Egan the drummer again is not just another drummer with an attitude. We all know that type... well less said the better. (I do know some good drummers!). His drumming was not just boom boom and a basic rhythm but lots of imagination. Not that he was bossy with it and demanding attention but like Dave he is a perfect complement to Hezron's music. This is the true based band. Prima donnas should always leave their tiaras at the entrance door.
What I'm writing here is about experience and the emotions that the Hezron: Project Trio arouse. You guys, please stick at this and keep making us happy with your music.
